Queensland

In December the Fellowship temporarily parted company. Phil travelled solo for a few weeks - Townsville to Brisbane, while Grania arrived from London and with Dan hired a car, travelling down to visit family friends Micki & Iain in Narooma. Then they flew up to "the FNQ" (Far North Queensland) for a quick visit to Nev & Trish (also family friends) in Cairns, before driving down to Mackay. From there, Grania departed for London but Dan remained, flying down to meet Beth in Brisbane. There the two Brigdens travelled back to Sydney, before reuniting with Phil for a very warm Xmas on Manly Beach. The Day after Boxing Day we said goodbye to meat pies and VB and boarded the flight to Christchurch...

Phil's Whitsundays Cruise on the Tall Ship Defender
My trip to the East Coast began in Townsville where I went on a dive on the shipwreck SS Yongala; it was then down to Arlie beach and onto the tallship Defender for a three-day cruise around the spectacular Whitsunday Islands. From there it was on the bus for a 12 hour journey to Noosa, where I dropped in on MR Watts for a few days before heading down to my final destination, Brisbane, to check out the "Brisvegas" nightlife with Keith and Helen. It was then southward bound to spend Christmas back in Manly before hitting the road again.
A Nice View
Whitehaven beach and the Whitsunday islands! There is nowhere on earth like it I did a cruise around the islands on a 200 year old tall ship. White sands on semi-deserted beaches, blue waters and amazing marine life are what we got to experience for three days.

The Crew of the Defender
This is the merry crew of the Defender - the ship I got the pleasure of sailing on with such a jolly crew for three days. The weather was hot, the waters calm and the entertainment plentiful. It was not all rest and relaxation though, as we did have to help sail and raise the rigging from time to time and it was hot, hot, hot.

The Dreaded Stinger Suit
This is Harriet modelling the funky wetsuits we had to wear every time we wanted to get in the water. Our captain told us it was essential we wear them because of the amount of jellyfish in the water at that time of the year. However, I got the feeling this could have been a slight exaggeration and they were actually finding it very amusing watching us walk around in these Lycra long johns.
