China

We left Hong Kong by Jet Cat and four hours later found ourselves in the heart of rural China... View the evidence here.

Mount Dingu

Olly
Our adventures in China began in a place called Mount Dingu, which is a national park in the province of Guangdong, where our problems with the language barrier truly began. This is Olly posing in the grounds of one of the many temples we went to in the park.

Dan & Phil at Dingu Shan Monastery
We climbed a fair amount of steps to reach this temple as it was at the highest point in the park. Although the fresh watermelon and pineapples made the journey worth while.
Phil & Olly
More views from the Monastery grounds. The buildings themselves are quite an amazing site and a spectacular feat of architecture.
Phil & Dan by the waterfall
We encountered quite a few scenic gems on our way up, this waterfall was one of them.

Dan & Olli Eating "Coke"
Now before you all start jumping to conclusions there is a story behind the above caption. On our way back down from the monastery we came across a beautifully-landscaped Chinese garden, so we decided to stop and check it out and ordered some "Coca Cola" to quench our thirst. Unfortunately due to the major language barrier we ended up with some Soya bean substance instead which the guy insisted was Coke. At this point we were too tired to argue with him so we ate it. That was pretty much a re-occurring theme during our time in China, which made it that much more fun.

Cycling to Moon Hill, Yangshuo
Olli, Phil & Dan on Bikes
Next stop Yangshuo. We had a very healthy stay in Yangshuo as we spent most of our days cycling around the surrounding countryside.
Dan & Phil
Just chilling!! we did a lot of that.

Group Photo on Moon Hill
Another one of our trekking expeditions this time it was to the nearby attraction of Moon Hill.

Amy
For those of you who've read my group e-mail this is Amy, for those of you that haven't Amy found us at a bus station in Wuzhou lost and confused and decided to take it upon herself to become our personal tour guide for the week. In exchange we would help her improve her spoken English (poor girl).  Anyway had she not taken pity on us we would still be at that bus station eating coke!!!

She made us wear those hats.

Group Photo on Moon Hill #2
The reason why it was called Moon Hill is because of the crescent moon rock formation in the background.
Dan Up A Pole
All that sun got a little too much for Dan.

Dan Up A Pole #2
Coaxing him down took a bit of time and effort. Luckily we brought along the cattle prod.

Moon Hill View
The rock formations you see are what Yangshuo is justifiably famous for.
Phil Up A Pole
It was only a matter of time.

Yangshuo View #3
This was what much of the countryside was like, vast paddy fields of rice with these huge rock formations looming in the background.

Out on the Town with Amy

Amy finally getting over her camera shyness.
Phil & His Women
Amy introduced us to some of her university friends as we checked out what Yangshuo's nightlife had to offer.

Clubbing in Yangshuo
This was quite an amusing night as the resident band at this bar was cleared out and alternative tunes were put on so we could dance, courtesy of our guide. We felt quite bad for the guys until we heard them play.

Phil & Dan with Beers
It had been a hard week.
Amy with Bike
More like Amy with her bike before Dan ran away with it.
Amy & Phil
The height difference was scary!!

Dan with Camera Issues
Dan's bad luck with the camera continues.

Rafting Down the River

Bamboo rafting down the Li river
After all the cycling we did we decided to try some other means of transport so we took a river ride down the Li river on bamboo rafts. It was a little bit hair-raising at some points as we had to go down a few rapids. Surprisingly enough, though, the rafts handled them quite well.

Caving in Yangshuo
Caving Group Photo
Caving in flip flops now that was an experience. We turned up and were given a hard hat and torch and told to enjoy. The cave itself was quite a tourist attraction but even so we were the only people in there. This photo shows the state we were in once when we arrived at the highlight of the expedition, the "rejuvenating" mud baths. Well it was fun sloshing about in it anyway.
Olli Covered in Mud
This is what it was all about.
Dan & Phil With Hard-hats
The other members of the band were still in the cave.

Yangshuo Park
Phil in Scotland Away Shirt
It was time for it to make an appearance, unfortunately it had to brief as I found that white clothing didn't last long in that heat.

The shirt struck a popular key with Olly and Dan.

  Fishing Village trip

Fishing Village #1
We undertook a trip to a small fishing village that had been visited by Bill Clinton during his presidency to see what it was all about. It was very quaint but far too quiet.

Phil & Olli On The Attack
Entertainment was lacking so we had to make our own. "The Kung-Fu Cockneys" will be released next summer.

  The Devil's Backbone
Still Life With Olli & Phil
Up in the hill villages where life is a bit different. The journey was long and most of it was spent on windy mountain roads with drops as far as the eye could see. Let's just say we were all glad to be out of the bus when the journey was over, even the driver.
  Phil With Head-Gear
Nuff said!!!
  Marching Up The Devil's Backbone
The Devil's Backbone is a series of rice paddies built on the side of the many hills in the area. Due to this steep terrain the only way for the hill tribes to grow their crops is to create these contour-like paddies creating this spectacular effect on the surrounding hills.
  Devil's Backbone #1
We walked up these hills just once and it took a lot of will power and water, these guys have to do this everyday in order to survive. It put a lot of things into perspective, not to mention highlighting our lack of fitness.

Phil's the one that needed the lift on this occasion.

  Phil & Olli In Disgrace
Now Dan used his computer expertise to superimpose Olly and Phil into this scenario in order to tarnish our good names and incriminate us. We were never there!!!!
