We flew in to Santiago on 21st January 2005, having never been to South America - let alone Chile - before. We spent a few days in the capital before visiting the nearby port of Valparaiso. Then we crossed the Andes by bus into Argentina. Quite a journey! After a few months in Argentina and Paraguay we eventually returned to Chile, where we spent a week in the desert towns of the far north before crossing into Peru.

Valparaiso

Ascensor
Valparaiso has a lot of hills. This is how the locals deal with them. They may look ancient and make very concerning noises when in motion, but these elevators on railway tracks get the job done with only limited fatalities.
